Measuring whether interventions deliver results

Moving monitoring beyond activity tracking toward understanding outcomes, effectiveness and what should change.

The Challenge

Programs can successfully complete activities without necessarily achieving their intended outcomes.

What did we do?

What changed, how do we know, and what should we do differently?

My Role

I applied Results-Based Management (RBM), Theory of Change and SMART indicator methodologies across 3 development initiatives to evaluate environmental, social and climate performance and strengthen evidence-based decision-making.

My work involved assessing performance against established objectives, safeguards and results frameworks while bringing together quantitative and qualitative evidence.

  1. 01

    Define Intended Change

Clarify the development challenge, intended outcomes and pathway through which interventions are expected to generate results.

  2. 02

    Build the Results Framework

Connect activities and outputs with measurable outcomes and longer-term objectives.

  3. 03

    Develop Indicators

Apply SMART principles to create meaningful and measurable indicators of performance.

  4. 04

    Assess Performance

Evaluate actual results against objectives, targets, safeguards and established results frameworks.

  5. 05

    Triangulate Evidence

Combine quantitative and qualitative information from multiple sources.

  6. 06

    Generate Learning

Identify what is working, where gaps remain and how implementation can adapt based on evidence.
